Polyester Yarn

Polyester POY

  • Extreme Elongation: Typically ranges from 100% to 130%, allowing the yarn to withstand significant drawing during the texturizing (DTY) process.

  • Processing Versatility: It serves as the main feedstock for producing DTY (Drawn Textured Yarn) and ITY (Intermingled Yarn).

  • Storage Sensitivity: POY has a specific shelf life; if stored for too long, its physical properties may shift, potentially causing issues during downstream processing.

  • Luster Variety: Available in Semi-Dull (SD) or Bright (BR) options depending on the end-use requirements.

Product information

1. Introduction

Polyester POY (Partially Oriented Yarn) is the primary form of yarn produced by spinning polyester chips (PET) at high speeds. Unlike FDY, POY is only partially stretched during the spinning process. This results in a molecular structure that is not yet fully stable, making it the ideal "precursor" or raw material for further texturizing and processing.

2. Composition and Structure

  • Material: 100% Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Polymer.

  • Molecular State: The polymer chains are partially aligned along the fiber axis but remain relatively loose and unoriented.

  • Physical State: The yarn has very high elongation, a slightly tacky surface, and is less lustrous than FDY.

3. Key Characteristics

Note: The Denier of POY is always higher than the final DTY product because the yarn thins out during the drawing process.

5. Practical Applications Table

As an intermediate product, POY is primarily used in the manufacturing of other yarn types:

Sector Specific Applications Role
DTY Production Feedstock for Texturizing machines Creates "bulky" yarn for knits, sportswear, and socks.
ITY Production Intermingling with other yarns Creates fashion fabrics with unique drapes and textures.
Technical Textiles Base material for certain non-wovens Utilizes high elongation to create bonded structures.
Draw Warping Direct weaving preparation Drawn and sized for high-speed weaving applications.

6. Comparison Table: POY vs. DTY vs. FDY

This table highlights the key differences between the three most common types of polyester filaments:

Feature POY (Partially Oriented) DTY (Drawn Textured) FDY (Fully Drawn)
Processing State Partially drawn Drawn & False-twisted Fully drawn
Surface Texture Smooth, slightly tacky Rough, bulky, crimped Smooth, sleek, straight
Elongation Very High ($>100\%$) Moderate ($20 - 30\%$) Low ($20 - 35\%$)
Primary Use Intermediate feedstock Knitted fabrics, apparel Woven satins, curtains, lining
Luster/Shine Low Matte/Adjustable High (Very glossy)
Strength Lowest Medium-High Highest
